The Europeanization of demand structures is turning out to be a great challenge in the defence sector, Bavaria's defence sector included. Currently, the approximately 550 companies that constitute the Bavarian aviation, aerospace and satellite navigation industry with their more than 36.000 employees (Airport employees not included), generate about 6,9 billion Euros turnover a year. From this, roughly 40% - equivalent to 2,8 billion Euros - are attributable to military markets. bavAIRia e.V. supports this industry and particularly the medium sized companies with its professional cluster and network management, in order to gain a successful position concerning the new structures which are characterized for example by the formation of the European Defence Agency EDA or the controversies towards clustering the medium-sized companies in Centres of Excellence CoE.
bavAIRia e.V. focuses on the following areas: Defence bavAIRia, development of competence databases, participation in fairs, symposia, contributions in export questions, technological projects. Besides the initiation of Dual-Use-technological-projects amounting to several millions of Euros, the following topics have been realised solely between 2007 and 2009: annual symposium, prospects in the defence market with DWT e.V. (see below), position paper of the Bavarian industrial and research sectors relating to Galileo Public Regulated Service PRS in Germany, Best-Practice-Panel at the Defence-SME-Conference of the Czech Department of Defence in the range of the Czech presidency closing with several measures towards questions in formation and further education.
bavAIRia e.V. identifies potential topics (e.g. Dual Use) as well as innovative Defence-Technology-Areas (e.g. Space Situation Awareness) and potential stakeholders. After that the analysis phase takes place. If necessary, studies are initiated to determine the best implementation strategy for recommended actions in consideration of current developments. In the medium term, bavAIRia e.V.'s ambition is to encourage the medium-sized companies? autonomy as well as stronger partnerships between distributor and client, to strengthen export support and to secure the allocated budget in 2010+X. bavAIRia focuses on important technological areas in aviation, aerospace and satellite navigation/Space Applications: UAV, helicopters, Simulation & Training, Military Aircraft, LFK, avionics, Aero Engines, Space Situation Awareness, robotics, mini-satellites, GMES, SatCom, spatial transportation, military space application, telemedicine, logistics, navigation, Galileo PRS, etc.
The symposium "Prospects in the Defence market", organized by the German Society of Defence Technology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Wehrtechnik e.V. -DWT) in cooperation with bavAIRia e.V. and the Aviation and Aerospace Forum Baden-Württemberg e.V. (Forum Luft- und Raumfahrt Baden-Württemberg e.V. - LRBW e.V.), is a dialog platform for industry and public consumers. Its purpose is to create an exchange of information and experiences regarding developments in the Defence market (announcements, individual projects, developments in foreign and corporate safety policy) and to further the partnership between Federal Armed Forces and economy. The symposium is especially characterized by high-ranking referees reporting on stage and by various workshops, e.g. in 2009: "Offset and Countertrade"/"Allocation of human resources in the fields of operation for the industrial sector"/"Military core capabilities - contributions from SMBs".
